“The news of the death of Andreas Brehme is a shock for FC Bayern and all German football fans. Andreas Brehme made history and will always be our 1990 World Cup winner. He was a down-to-earth person and someone you could always depend on. He”ll forever be part of the FC Bayern family. Our deepest sympathies go to his family and friends,” Herbert Hainer, FC Bayern president.
Kaiserslautern also paid tribute to the former left-back, saying: “He wore the Red Devils’ shirt for a total of 10 years and became German champion and German Cup winner with FCK. In 1990 he fired the German national team to the World Cup title with his penalty and became a football legend. The FCK family is in deep mourning.”
Brehme made 86 appearances for his national team besides winning titles with Kaiserslautern, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan. He scored through a late penalty in the 1990 World Cup final to secure victory against Argentina in Rome and also scored from the spot when his country beat England in the semi-finals.
His death comes month after German legend Franz Beckenbauer who coached Germany to the 1990 triumph besides winning the showpiece event as a player.
