The cricketing world witnessed Glenn Maxwell’s mayhem at Wankhade stadium as the Australian scored 201 runs against Afghanistan in the ICC World Cup 2023. Maxwell led Aussies to the semi-finals of the tournament after rewriting the history. Several illustrious milestones were achieved during the match.
He made an astonishing innings of 201 runs not out from 128 balls, with the help of 21 fours and 10 sixes. He struck at a strike rate of over 157.
The innings will go down in the history as one of the greatest ODI innings. Breaking the trend, Australia became the first team to surpass 280 at the Wankhede Stadium. On Tuesday, things went upside down when Australia were seven down for just 91 in their chases of 292. But the eve turned out to be a tragic day for Afghanistan. They were just three wickets away from the semifinal berth. But unfortunately, the day was marked in the name of Australia.
The 201 knock was added to greatness due to Maxwell’s willingness to push all boundaries. Despite battling the humid climate in Mumbai and cramps, he was seen hobbling on the field, clinching his thigh in sheer agony. Yet he battled without a step back.
Records smashed on Tuesday:
- Maxwell’s unbeaten 201 is the highest individual score in ODI’s surpassing Pakistan’s opener Fakhar Zaman’s 193 against South Africa in 2011.
- He became the first Australian batter to score a double century in ODIs.
- Maxwell’s double ton surpassed Zimbabwe’s Charles Conventry’s 194 in 2009 as the highest score by a non-opener.
- He completed his double hundreds in 128 balls making him the second fastest after Indian batter Ishan Kishan who scored with 126 balls.
- This is the third double century in the history of ODI World Cup after Martin Guptill and Chris Gayle.
