Mumbai Indians today announced that all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who re-joined the club from Gujarat Titans, is set to take the helm as the captain of the Indian Premier League club. Hardik Pandya, who is the current vice-captain of the Indian cricket team in limited overs format, succeeding Mumbai Indians’ longest-serving, one of the most successful and loved captains the illustrious Rohit Sharma.
Mumbai Indians” Global Head of Performance, Mahela Jayawardene, described Hardik Pandya”s appointment as captain for IPL 2024 as “part of building a legacy and remaining true to MI”s philosophy of being future-ready.”
He emphasized that Mumbai Indians has a history of exceptional leadership figures, such as Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh, Ricky Ponting, and Rohit Sharma, who while leading the team to immediate success, also focused on strengthening it for the future. Jayawardene stated that it is in accordance with this philosophy that Hardik Pandya has been chosen as captain.
Expressing gratitude to Rohit Sharma, Jayawardene lauded his “exceptional leadership” as Mumbai Indians captain since 2013. He called Rohit”s tenure “extraordinary,” highlighting how it brought “unparalleled success” and cemented his place as “one of the finest IPL captains ever.” Jayawardene credited Rohit for turning Mumbai Indians into “one of the most successful and loved teams ever,” while assuring that his “guidance and experience” would continue to be valued “on and off the field” to further strengthen the team.
“We welcome Hardik Pandya as the new captain of MI and wish him all the very best,” he added.
