Messi's 2022 World Cup Shirts Out For Auction At Sotheby: Expects To Bring In $10 Million

Lionel Messi’s shirts that he wore during the football World Cup held at Qatar last year will be taken to auction. Sotheby will keep the shirts on auction. The shirts worn by Lional Messi during Argentina’s winning run would make a most valuable collection of sports memorabilia ever to be sold, and is expected to raise more than $10 million.

Messi posted on his Instagram sharing the details of the auction. The auction will take place between November 30 and December 14. Bids can be placed online. Messi also said that a portion of the money collected from the auction will be donated to “Barcelona’s Children’s Hospital to meet the needs of children suffering from rare diseases”.

On Monday, the auction house said that six of the seven shirts worn by Messi including the one he wore during the historic victory of Argentina against France will be put up for sale in New York. The shirts will be put on view in a free, public exhibition during the date of bid.

Sotheby, which was founded in London in 1744 will work with US based tech startup AC Momento. Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA Finals jersey which was sold for $10.i million in September 2022, is the current record for the sports memorabilia.

Football memorabilia is the shirt worn by Diego Maradona during Argentina’s 1986 quarterfinal victory over England on 2-1, during which he scored one goal with his hand, a goal which he claimed owed to the “Hand of God”. The jersey was sold for $9.3 million at Sotheby’s in May 2022 in London.

Messi, who is considered as the “Greatest Of All Time (GOAT)”, concreted his place among the all-time greats along with Pele and Maradona. Winning Ballon d’Or for eight times in a row and making the historic win during the FIFA World Cup 2023, Messi erased all the speculations him being called as GOAT.
