Neha Sangwan, Native Of Vinesh Phogat's Village, Crowned U-17 World Champion

Rising Indian wrestler Neha Sangwan clinched the gold medal in the Women’s Freestyle 57kg category at the U-17 World Wrestling Championships 2024 on Thursday.

Sangwan, who hails from three-time Olympian Vinesh Phogat’s village,  overpowered Japan’s So Tsutsui 10-0 at the Princess Sumaya Bint al-Hasan Arena in Amman, Jordan in Amman, Jordan. She dedicated the World Championships title to Phogat and all the other women wrestlers from India.

“It’s a huge thing for me and this title is for Vinesh didi and all the women wrestlers. Vinesh didi remains an inspiration for us all and this world title will inspire the women wrestlers back in Balali village as well India too,” Neha told The Indian Express from Jordan after the final bout.

In her formative years, she started training under Mahavir Phogat in 2016, before changing her coach after clinching the junior national medals and becoming a Haryana State Champion.

The U-17 World Wrestling Championships 2024 will run till August 25 with India clinching four gold medals and two bronze so far. The women’s freestyle events will be contested from August 21 to 23 while men’s freestyle begins on Friday and concludes on the 25th.
