In a match that showcased Pakistan’s erratic style of cricket on Friday, they once again delivered an unpredictable performance in the tri-nation series final against New Zealand, just ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025.
After a thrilling victory over South Africa to secure their spot in the final, Pakistan’s hopes of redemption were dashed as they were comfortably beaten by New Zealand, who proved to be too strong on the day.
However, it wasn’t just New Zealand’s dominance on the field that captured attention, but Pakistan’s series of blunders that left fans and broadcasters alike shaking their heads.
The drama began early in the game when Pakistan was defending a modest total of 242. In the crucial early stages of New Zealand’s chase, Pakistan had a prime opportunity to dismiss Tom Latham, who was just 13.
Spinner Abrar Ahmed appeared to have trapped Latham Plumb in front of the stumps with an LBW appeal. But to Pakistan’s surprise, the umpire ruled it not out, and the team chose not to review the decision.

Replays later revealed that the ball would indeed have hit the stumps, with the Hawk-Eye showing three reds, meaning Latham would have been dismissed had the review been taken.

Just a couple of overs later, another golden chance went begging. Facing pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, Latham attempted a straight drive that was mistimed and sent directly back towards Afridi.

But the Pakistani bowler failed to hold on to the straightforward catch, and Latham survived yet again, now on 15.

Though Afridi later claimed Latham’s wicket for 56, the damage had already been done. Latham’s crucial knock propelled New Zealand closer to victory, which was ultimately sealed with ease.

The comedy of errors left spectators, including broadcasters, in disbelief. “Pakistan never fails to entertain!” tweeted one broadcaster, highlighting the team’s unpredictable nature. (Watch the video here)

In the end, New Zealand triumphed by five wickets to valuable half-centuries from Latham (56) and Daryl Mitchell (57), along with contributions from Devon Conway (48) and Kane Williamson (34).

Pakistan’s total of 242, built largely on the efforts of Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha, was never enough, and despite late cameos from Tayyab Tahir, Faheem Ashraf, and Naseem Shah, New Zealand completed a comfortable victory.

The two teams will meet again in just a few days, facing off in the opening match of the Champions Trophy 2025 on February 19. Alongside India and Bangladesh, this will be one of the most highly anticipated encounters in the upcoming tournament.
