Sourav Ganguly turned to ‘Blackout DP’ on X to show solidarity towards Kolkata’s rape-murder victim Moumita Debnath on Monday.
The former India captain used the hashtag ‘#NewProfilePic’ on his display picture which gained mixed reactions on the internet. He was called out by several social media users for referring to the heinous crime as just another ‘stray incident’ while others said that the former BCCI president took the right stance after facing the backlash.

After his interview faced backlash on social media, Ganguly issued a statement, stating that his opinion might have been misinterpreted or misconstrued.
“I said that last Sunday, I don’t know how it was construed or interpreted. I have said it earlier also, it’s a terrible thing. Now the CBI, police are investigating the matter. It’s very shameful what has happened,” Ganguly told reporters.
“The punishment should be such that no one dares to commit such crime again in their life. That is important. Punishment has to be severe,” he added.
The responsibility for Kolkata’s murder-rape incident has been handed over to CBI’s top women officers who have handled such cases before.
Sampat Meena, a 1994 batch IPS officer from Jharkhand, who handled the Hathras rape-murder case and the Unnao rape case along with Seema Pahuja, a part of the Hathras investigation team, will be at helm of the case.
