'Genuine Dearth Of Talent': Sourav Ganguly Laments Pakistan's Poor Form

Sourav Ganguly lamented Pakistan’s dip in form after their underwhelming performance against Bangladesh, which saw them lose 0-2 in the two-Test series.

The former India captain compared the current lot of Pakistan cricketers to the likes of the greats like Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram, Mohammad Yousuf, etc., and advised their board to focus on producing outstanding players in every generation.

The dip in form was largely in focus during the T20 World Cup 2024 and 50-Over World Cup where they were knocked out in the Group Stage. Moreover, the change in captaincy, did not work in their favor.

“I see a genuine dearth of talent in the country. Every time we think of Pakistan, we remember Miandad, Wasim, Waqar, Saeed Anwar, Mohammad Yousuf, and Younis Khan,” Ganguly said at an event.

“That’s the memory of Pakistan for us, but that doesn’t win matches in the modern generation of cricket. Every generation has to produce outstanding players to win, and when I look at Pakistan in world cricket — I saw them in the West Indies World Cup, in India during the World Cup, and now after the Bangladesh series loss — there is a dearth of talent in that country.

“The people connected with the sport in Pakistan will have to look into it. I’m not saying this with disrespect. Pakistan of the old had some great cricketers, which I don’t see in this squad,” the former India captain added.

Notably, Pakistan’s approach to appoint South Africa batter Gary Kirsten as the head coach in limited-overs ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024 besides naming Australian bowling great Jason Gillespie the head coach of the Test team before the Bangladesh series, backfired due to their poor performances.

Pakistan’s next assignment will be in England where they feature in a three-Test series, starting from October 7.
