Kolkata Rape Case: Protests Held Across 25 Countries, Supreme Court To Hear Case Today

A bench consisting of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra will hear the case about the rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital today.

Meanwhile, thousands of members of the Indian community were protesting in more than 130 cities across 25 countries on Sunday demanding accountability for the crime and safety of Indian women.

The Supreme Court will hear the matter at 10:30 am. Meanwhile, the Centre has urged the Supreme Court to address the West Bengal government’s failure to provide logistical support to the CISF, which is responsible for security at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

In its application, the Union ministry has alleged the TMC government’s lack of cooperation and requested the state authorities be directed to provide full support to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

The apex court while hearing the case on August 20, described the incident as “horrific” and issued a set of directions, including the establishment of a 10-member National Task Force to formulate a protocol for ensuring the safety and security of doctors and other healthcare professionals.

The court has also asked the protesting doctors to resume their work and assured them that no adverse action will be taken after they rejoin.

Meanwhile, the victim’s parents on Sunday accused the police of trying to cover up the crime. Joining a protest in the city, they said they would be forced to “snatch” justice for their daughter.

The father of the victim added that the huge outpouring of public support gave them the courage to fight for justice for their daughter.

“We won’t get justice easily. We have to snatch it. This will not be possible without everybody’s help,” the father of the victim said, reports TOI.

The Kolkata doctor was found murdered inside the seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Her autopsy later confirmed rape and assault. She had around 25 internal and external injuries in her body.
