Bikers Offer Lift, Rape 42-Year-Old Woman, Arrested In Tamil Nadu's Budalur

A construction worker woman, who was on her way back to home after the day’s work, was gangraped by two bikers in Tamil Nadu’s Budalur on Tuesday night. The 42-year-old woman from a village near Budalur missed the last bus she used to board from Thanjavur to her village on Tuesday. It was when she was standing at the bus stop that the two men on two separate bikes offered her a lift to her village.

The women accepted the lift and rode pillion on one bike while the other biker followed them. According to a report by The New Indian Express, the two bikers, when they reached near Palayeevayal, stopped their vehicles, dragged the women to a paddy field, and raped her.

After the sexual assault, the duo reportedly dropped the victim midway and threatened her against disclosing the incident. Anxious over the mother not returning from work, the woman’s son went searching for her en route to her work location, finally finding her on the road. The son then took his mother home, and she later described her ordeal to the family members. The woman was admitted to the Government Raja Mirasdar Hospital.

The woman later lodged a complaint with the Budalur police, and the police on Thursday have arrested 34-year-old Praveen Kumar and 26-year-old R Rajkapur from Rayandur near Budalur for alleged gang-rape in connection with the  incident. According to the police, the accused tried to flee when the cops tried to detain them. During the attempt, the youth fell down and “fractured their limbs.” The accused is currently receiving treatment at the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital.

The police registered a case under relevant sections of the BNS, including that for gang rape and criminal intimidation.

As discussion on the safety of women in the country is on with the horrific Kolkata rape and murder incident, the incident has received public attention. The former chief minister, Edappadi K. Palaniswami, demanded the government take effective steps to ensure the safety of women in public.
