In an upsetting development in a sexual assault case, a rape survivor has been forced to withdraw her complaint by the police in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki. The police allegedly asked the accused to pay Rs 50,000 to the 16-year-old victim to settle the case.
According to the report, the incident occurred on August 22 when the accused, Ankit Verma, a 25-year-old married man, abducted the girl and raped her and continued the sexual abuse repeatedly, after taking the victim to a hotel in Ghaziabad. The teen in her complaint alleged that the accused’s brother forced her to accept deal she does not want, and the police have detained the sibling in the case.

When the victim’s condition worsened on August 25, the accused left the minor outside her house and threatened her. After the family of the victim complained about the accused, the police locked up the suspect in a room at a police outpost for 10 hours and then allegedly forced a truce, reported the Times of India. The victim’s uncle had registered the complaint, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused, but the probe was delayed, the media house added.
The survivor was later told by the police to withdraw her complaint after the police promised to pay Rs 50,000 to her. Speaking about the case, Superintendent of Police Dinesh Singh said he removed police station in-charge Arun Pratap Singh and suspended another cop, Manoj Kumar, for the alleged truce in the rape case.

According to the teenager’s uncle, after her father was murdered in 2018 and her mother died by suicide later, he has been looking after the girl and her brother.
The incident comes to light when the country is already outraged over the rape and murder of a Kolkata trainee doctor earlier and the allegations by the parents to cover up the crime by the authorities.
