Supreme Court Slams UP Police For Not Invoking Key Incriminating Provisions In Hate Crime Against Muslim Cleric

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday criticised Uttar Pradesh police over their failure to invoke key provisions to the First Information Report against those accused in an alleged hate crime incident against a Muslim cleric in Noida.

The court rebuked the state while questioning the conduct of the investigating officer for not adding hate crime-related provisions to earlier orders.

During the hearing, a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta asked, ‘Why is your investigation officer playing hide and seek with the Court? Can you back out from 153B?’ The court added that Section 153B penalizes imputations and assertions prejudicial to national integration.
