Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez has announced that he will step down from the manager post at the end of the season, saying that he can’t get the team out of a slump.

The Barca manager announced his decision on Saturday, minutes after Barcelona lost to Villarreal 5-3 in the Spanish league, leaving it 10 points adrift of leader Real Madrid, says Hindustan Times.

“I would like to announce that on June 30 I will cease being the coach of Barça,” Xavi said. “As a Barcelona fan, I can’t allow this situation to continue, we need a change of course and of dynamics.”

Xavi has decided to quit from the post much earlier but the hard defeat to Villareal set the scene for him to announce the decision. He said that this decision would help him to reduce the stress and tension his team has been enduring.

He further added that the feeling of being the coach of Barcelona is cruel and unpleasant. “You feel like you don’t get the respect you deserve,” Xavi said.

“It wears you down, affects your mental health, your emotions, up to the point that you say you can’t go on. My loved ones know that.”

Xavi announced his decision during the press conference after the match. He concluded by saying that the decision has been made and can’t be changed even if they win the title at the end of the season.

The Barca’s performance in the current season hasn’t been the best this season. And the pressure was seemingly mounted on the legendary midfielder.
Xavi joined Barcelona as their manager in November 2021. The 44-year-old led the team to the Spanish Super Cup title and the Spanish league title last season, the club’s first trophies since the exit of Lionel Messi.
