Indian Men’s Football team captain Sunil Chhetri will play his last match for the national team against Kuwait at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Thursday night. The Indian international is performing the last dance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, while the Indian team eyeing to qualify for the third round, which never been before.

The 39-year-old legend is retiring from Internationals after 150 matches and total 94 goals for the country, a record in which only Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, Iran’s Ali Daei and Argentina’s Lionel Messi are ahead of him. Chhetri had debuted 19 years back in 2005 against Pakistan at Ayub Stadium in Quetta, then he led the Indian team to the new heights.

Chhetri has announced the retirement from international football on May 16 in an emotionally moving video through his social media platforms, stating that June 6 will the last game for the national side.

According to an AIFF report, Chhetri said that this would be one of the biggest games that he had played for 19 years. He has added that the team has high confidence about the win and qualifying to third round.

He has made the country believe in their national team and inspired millions to kick a football, like his predecessor Baichung Bhutia.

Despite the anticipated tough fight in the World cup qualifier, the Salt Lake stadium would simply be the best farewell for the captain.

The match between India and Kuwait will be broadcast on Sports 18 1, Sports 18 1 HD, Sports 18 3 and live streamed on Jio Cinema on June 6 at 7pm.
