As the India football team”s greatest goal scorer, Sunil Chhetri brought down the curtains on his inspirational career, fans and friends from the close circuit congratulated him for inspiring millions.

Former India captain Virat Kohli, a close friend of Chhetri, commented “My Brother, Proud”, on his Instagram post while BCCI reshared his 10-minute video on X to congratulate him for his extraordinary career.

“Your career has been nothing short of extraordinary and you have been a phenomenal icon for Indian football and Indian sports. Go well, Captain! #TeamIndia,” BCCI said.

Chhetri will feature in his farewell match against Kuwait on June 6 for the World Cup Qualifier. He announced his retirement from the international career after 19 years, finishing as the most-prolific goal scorer of the country with a tally of 94, which is the fourth in the list of all-time highest goal-scorer in international football.

In his club career, the Indian talisman also plied his trade for clubs like Coventry City and Kansas City Wizards while also featuring for Indian football giants Mohun Bagan and East Bengal. He has been a regular feature for Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League (ISL).

The 39-year-old was conferred with the Khel Ratna Award, Padma Shri Award and Arjuna Award besides winning the AIFF Player of the Year award seven times.
