Vinesh Phogat Disqualified From Paris Olympics?

Vinesh Phogat, Indian woman wrestler is likely to be disqualified from Paris Olympics 2024 as she was unable to make the weight on the morning of her 50 kg medal bout. It was heartbreaking twist of fate for Vinesh as well as India.

“It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class,” the IOA said in a statement.

The sources has said that despite the best effort of the team through the night, Vinesh weighed in few grams over 50kg in the morning. ”

“No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand,” the officials said. Earlier sources has said that the wrestler was roughly 100 grams over the permissible limits which could lead to her disqualification.

As per the competition rules, Phogat will not be eligible even for a silver medal and the 50 kg will have just gold and bronze medal winners. Vinesh had made the weight for Tuesday’s bouts as per rule, wrestlers will have to stay within their weight category on both days of the competition.

On each day of the competition, all the competing wrestlers will have medical examination and weigh-in. Each boxer is also given a post-bout medical examination.

Vinesh usually competed in the 53 kg category but brought her weight down to 50 kg for the Paris Olympics. She had competed in the women’s 53 kg before she returned to competitive action after a 15-month break in January 2024.

Earlier on Tuesday, the wrestler had scripted history by becoming the first woman to reach the final of a wrestling event in Olympic games. She won the semi-finals by after defeating Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez to confirm a medal.
