Following Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Paris 2024, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Sanjay Singh on Wednesday suggested reprimanding her support staff after she was not able to meet her weight ahead of the gold medal match.
There were drastic measures taken to help the Indian wrestler, including her performing some exercises, while part of her hair was even cut. However, it was not enough as she was found overweight by 100gms on day two of the weigh-in and subsequently disqualified from the event.
“It is not a fault of Vinesh. She was performing amazingly. The coaches, the support staff, the physios, and the nutritionists should take full responsibility,” Sanjay Singh told PTI.
“They should have paid attention to her all the time to ensure nothing of this sort happens. How this happened and how she went over the weight limit must be looked into. I request the Government of India to take action against all those responsible,” he said.
Vinesh trains with her personal coach Woller Akos and has also worked with a South African strength and mental conditioning coach Wayne Lombard. She had opted to train with Akos and the government of India had cleared her demands. Her coach played a crucial role in reshaping her style of play and was granted full-access accreditation like other national coaches.
Apart from that India’s chief medical officer, Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala has been taking care of the needs and other members of the national contingent.
