India has made remarkable progress in the expansion of 5G. According to a recent report, 5G subscriptions in the country are expected to reach 130 million by the end of 2023. The Ericsson Mobility Report for November 2023 also projected that 5G subscriptions are estimated to grow to 860 million by 2029.

The report also revealed that 4G continues to be the major subscription type, driving connectivity and boosting data growth in the country. However, subscribers are shifting to 5G. Thus, 4G subscriptions are forecast to fall from 870 million in 2023 to 390 million by 2029. Total mobile subscriptions in the Indian market are projected to surge to 1.27 billion by 2029.

As per the Ericsson Mobility Report, the average data traffic per smartphone in India is the highest globally. It is expected to grow from 31 GB per month in 2023 to around 75 GB per month in 2029. The report also reveals that there will be 610 million new 5G subscriptions globally for the calendar year 2023. Notably, it is a 63 percent increase from 2022. Also, total mobile data traffic may surge threefold between the end of 2023 and the end of 2029. This surge is due to various factors, including improved device capabilities and an increase in data-intensive content.

In October, Ivan Razon, Vice President of Strategy and Corporate Affairs at Ericsson, highlighted the expansion of the fifth generation of cellular networks in India. In a LinkedIn post, Ivan Razon said that India has made remarkable progress in 5G standalone availability, while Europe lags behind. It is worth mentioning that 5G services were launched in the country during the Indian Mobile Congress held in Delhi on October 1, 2022.
