Chakshu Portal: India's Tool To Combat Online Fraud

On March 4, the central government introduced the Chakshu portal, which is aimed at safeguarding the citizens of the country from mobile phone frauds. The Chakshu portal will allow users to report calls and messages from fraudsters. Centre has also launched ‘Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP)’ for coordination among the stakeholders to curb misuse of telecom resources in cybercrime and financial frauds.

According to the Ministry of Communications, Chakshu is the latest addition to the citizen centric facilities already available on the Sanchar Saathi portal of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). The ministry said in its statement that this significant initiative helps citizens report suspected fraud communication received over call, SMS, or WhatsApp with the intention of defrauding. Users can report scams to bank accounts, payment wallets, SIMs, gas connections, electricity connections, and KYC updates.

How to use the Chakshu portal?
> Visit the Sanchar Saathi website by logging in sancharsaathi.gov.in
> Under “Citizen Centric Services”, select the Chakshu option.
> Proceed to report after reading the disclaimer.
> Enter certain details, including the medium, category, and timing of the suspected fraud communication.
> Enter the personal details, verify the OTP, and submit the complaint.

While unveiling the Chakshu platform, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the Department of Telecommunication has taken several initiatives to spread awareness so that citizens can protect themselves from cyber-frauds and can make use of such tools for addressing their grievances. It is to be noted that the Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) is not accessible to citizens as it is a secure and integrated platform for real time intelligence sharing, information exchange, and coordination among stakeholders, including telecom service providers and law enforcement agencies.
