Samsung made a significant announcement on January 5 that they would team up with Tesla on energy management for smart homes. With this partnership, Samsung’s SmartThings platform users will be able to connect to Tesla products, including electric vehicles (EVs), Powerwall home battery and solar inverters. The South Korean tech giant is the first partner of Tesla that uses the EV producer”s application programming interface (API) to connect Tesla”s services to Samsung”s SmartThings app.
Samsung Electronics announced that the new service will be first demonstrated at the eagerly anticipated Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024, which will begin on January 9. According to Samsung, the key benefit for consumers with this collaboration is that they will be able to monitor and manage the energy status of Tesla”s various products through SmartThings.
“Additionally, consumers will be able to better prepare for power disruptions and outages through SmartThings Energy’s ability to sync with the Tesla app’s Powerwall “Storm Watch” function,” said Samsung in its press release. Samsung said that the SmartThings Energy platform connected to the Tesla Powerwall will be first demonstrated at the Samsung booth at the upcoming CES. This service is expected to make its official launch in the second quarter of this year.
Samsung Electronics executive vice president Chanwoo Park said that the new collaboration with Tesla is a key milestone for Samsung in making their “solution more widely available beyond home appliances.” It is worth mentioning that Samsung has also announced a collaboration with Hyundai Motor Group to expand its SmartThings platform to support connected cars. Samsung and Hyundai have also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on January 3 to unfold solutions for future lifestyles that fully integrate the smart home and connected cars.
