Google Sacks Hundreds Of Core Employees; Plans To Hire Corresponding Roles From Mexico, India

Amid increasing job cuts in the tech field, Google“s parent organisation Alphabet Inc has fired around 200 employees from its core team. The measure is learnt to be part of the restructuring process to cut the cost. The reorganisation includes moving some positions to India and Mexico, CNBC reported.

Around 50 roles in the core engineering department from the tech giant”s California headquarters have been removed, as per the report. The layoff has taken place in the crucial department which develops technical foundations for the company”s products.

Google Developer Ecosystem”s vice president Asim Husain announced the company”s move in an email to the employees, noting that it was the biggest workforce cut from the team this year. The decision was announced a day before Google”s first-quarter earnings report.

Asim Husain further pointed out that the company intends to maintain its “current global footprint while also expanding in high-growth global workforce locations.”

Notably, the workers impacted by the layoff will be provided with the opportunity to apply for other open roles at the company, as per the spokesperson.

The company is simplifying its structure to provide employees more opportunities to work on its innovative projects while reducing bureaucracy and layers, The New York Post quoted a Google spokesperson.

However, Google has been continuing its layoffs. The company had announced its plan to remove around 12,000 roles following a reported decline in its online advertisements revenue.

Notably, the latest cut comes at a time when the company recorded its fastest growth rate since the beginning of 2022 and raised profit margins. The search engine giant reported a 15% jump in first-quarter revenue from a year earlier.
