Open AI Launches 'Deep Research', New Research Tool For ChatGPT

OpenAI has introduced a new feature called ‘Deep Research’ and it will be available for ChatGPT Pro users from Monday. The AI agent is meant to assist people in conduct in-depth, complex research using ChatGPT. The ‘Deep Research’ option in ChatGPT’s interface is meant for users who need to analyse multiple sources meticulously.

“Deep research is built for people who do intensive knowledge work in areas like finance, science, policy, and engineering and need thorough, precise, and reliable research,” Open AI said in the blog post. The option will also be equally useful for “discerning shoppers looking for hyper-personalized recommendations on purchases that typically require careful research, like cars, appliances, and furniture,” it added.

In the interface, users can select the ‘deep research’ option, enter a query, and attach files or spreadsheets if necessary. It may take between 5 to 30 minutes to formulate a response, notifying users when it is ready. The final result comes as a report within the chat. The Deep Research is proficient at giving comprehensive, well-documented answers with citations tracing the verifiable sources, while GPT-4 is better suited for real-time, multimodal conversations, the Open AI states.

Also, the ChatGPT deep research’s output are now text-only. But Open AI said in the blog: “in the next few weeks, we will also be adding embedded images, data visualizations, and other analytic outputs in these reports for additional clarity and context.”

At present, the Deep Research feature is available on the web version of the ChatGPT and is limited to Pro users, with a limit of 100 queries per month. They are planning to extend the access to Plus and Team users next, followed by Enterprise customers. However, the this new feature will not be currently available in the UK, Switzerland, and the European Economic Area.
