Windows Photos App Gets Generative Erase Feature

Microsoft has recently announced a major update to the Windows Photos app. With this update, removing unwanted things from images is now easier in Windows Photos. The software giant has added an AI edit feature called Generative Erase in the Photos app, which helps users remove small and large objects from photos.

The Generative Erase feature is similar to the Spot fix tool. “Our well-known Spot fix tool has received a boost with the help of AI and is now known as Generative erase in the app,” said the company in its blog. With the latest AI-powered feature, users will be able to fix and remove distractions from the photos, including background objects or miscellaneous visual clutter.

Microsoft claims that Generative Erase delivers a realistic and seamless result after erasing the objects, even for large areas. To use this feature, navigate to the edit button on an image and choose the erase option. Then, users can use the brush tool to mark the parts that need to be erased. If users need to erase multiple things at the same time, they can turn off auto-apply and use masks. Notably, each mask represents an area that will be erased. The AI feature is expected to make the Photos app more powerful.

Microsoft also mentioned that users are required to update their Photos app to version number 2024.11020.21001.0 or higher to access the feature on the device. AI-powered features, including background blur, object removal, and Generative Erase are now accessible on Windows 10 and Arm64 devices in Windows Insider Channels. The tech giant said that Windows 10 will receive all of the AI editing features that were previously only available on Windows 11.
