Elon Musk’s X Corp executed a record-breaking ban of 2,395,495 Twitter accounts from India, says its official monthly report. The report covers the time period from 26 June 2023 to 25 July 2023.
In accordance with the Article 4(d) of Indian Information Technology (Intermediary Guideline and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, Twitter publishes reports of handling complaints monthly.
The major reason for the ban includes the promotion of child sexual exploitation and non-consensual nudity.
1,851,022 accounts were removed for engaging in child sexual exploitation and similar contents. And 2,865 were suspended for promoting terrorism.
X, headed by Elon Musk, has received a total of 3,340 user complaints from India through its grievance redressal mechanism in its June-July time period. Among them, 2,056 complaints were from Indian users.
In the mentioned time period, X has handled 46 grievances for child sexual exploitation, 14 for defamation, 54 for hateful conduct, 19 for illegal activities, 42 for impersonation, 6 for IP- infringement, 26 for misinformation and manipulation, 17 for sensitive adult content, 48 for privacy infringement and one for promoting suicide or self-harm.
49 grievances appealing account suspensions were also processed by the company.
The IT rule of 2021 demands a monthly compliance report from major digital and social media platforms boasting over 5 million users. India belongs to the top five with around 24 million users in Twitter, says reports.
The report includes details of actions taken on the complaints, and the URLs that it has taken action as a result of proactive monitoring efforts.
