BCAS Introduces Stricter Hand Baggage Rules For Air Travel: All You Need to Know.

The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) announced new hand baggage rules on Saturday for air travellers in India which will come into effect next month.

The move is set to be aimed to enhance security and streamline airport operations amid rising passenger numbers.

According to the new rules, passengers will be allowed to carry only one handbag or cabin bag weighing up to 7 kg. Any additional luggage must be checked in.

The maximum allowable size for cabin bags has also been specified as 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm, ensuring uniformity across airlines and simplifying security screenings.

If a passenger’s cabin bag exceeds the specified size or weight, excess baggage fees will apply. However, tickets issued before May 2, 2024, will follow the previous baggage policy. Reissued or rescheduled tickets, though, will adhere to the new limits. Economy: up to 8 kg, Premium Economy: up to 10 kg,  First and Business Class: up to 12 kg.

Airlines like IndiGo and Air India have already updated their baggage policies to align with the new guidelines.


Passengers are encouraged to review the latest requirements to avoid any last-minute surprises or additional costs. The new rules are expected to improve the efficiency of airport operations, reduce congestion at security checkpoints and provide a smoother travel experience.
