New Delhi: As the Waqf amendment bill was tabled in parliament on Wednesday, the house witnessed intense debate discussing the contentious bill. The opposition parties have unanimously decided to vote against the bill, calling it discriminatory and unconstitutional.
During the debate, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), one of the major allies of the BJP in parliament, asked the Union Government to allow freedom for state governments in deciding the composition including who should be part of the Waqf board.

Speaking on the floor, the TDP MP Krishna Prasad listed out the initiative his party took to uplift Muslim communities, noting that they always work to ensure the safety of minorities.
The TDP MP also highlighted economic and educational backwardness of the Muslim communities and pointed out the community has been treated unfairly in getting resources. He further underscored the need to support the community.

Stating that his party backs the Waqf amendment bill, the MP claimed the bill would help improve the lives of Muslims. He also claimed that three suggestions made by the TDP were included in the bill.
The Muslim bodies have been opposing the bill since it was first introduced in 2024. The community views it as another attempt by the ruling BJP to snatch away their rights.
