In what could have been a tragic incident, an IndiGo aircraft touched down on the same runaway from where an Air India jet was taking off at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Saturday.

A video of the moment has gone viral on social media where both the aircrafts can be seen on runway 27 at Mumbai airport. The IndiGo flight 6E 5053 was arriving from Indore landed on the runway at the same time when the Air India flight AI657 was taking off for Thiruvananthapuram International Airport.

As per the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) guidelines, the Air Traffic Controller (ATC) can only give landing clearance when there is enough assurity that the landing flight won’t cross the threshold until the departing flight has crossed the end of the runway. According to a statement by the ATC guild, the rule had not been violated as the visibility was good and there were no proximity issues.

Retired flight Lieutenant Anoop Verma stated, “Though take-off and landing speeds are much slower but the landing speed of a commercial airliner is pegged at 160-180 mph is much higher than the takeoff speed of around 130-160 mph. So in a worst case scenario, Indigo plane would have crashed into Air India plane which was taking off. Thankfully we have had no loss.”
