The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) have commenced a “limited ground invasion of southern Lebanon”, targeting Hezbollah positions deemed an immediate threat to Israeli communities. The occupation force said that it is involved in an intense fighting with Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. Earlier, in a statement, the IDF confirmed that the operations are based on precise intelligence and are focused on specific targets in villages near the border.
According to the IDF, “the ground raids are part of a systematic plan” developed by the General Staff and Northern Command, with troops having prepared extensively over recent months. The operation, named “Northern Arrows,” is being supported by the Israeli Air Force and artillery, which are conducting precision strikes on military infrastructure in the region.
This escalation follows a period of intense conflict, with the IDF claiming to achieve “its war objectives and ensuring the safety of Israeli citizens”. The military stated that it would continue its operations based on ongoing situational assessments, while also engaging in combat in Gaza and other areas.
In contrast, the United States has urged for de-escalation amid the rising tensions. US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, reaffirmed the Biden administration’s commitment to peace, expressing concern over the potential spread of violence. However, the US has faced criticism for its continued military aid to Israel amidst calls for restraint.
The humanitarian situation in Lebanon has deteriorated significantly, with Israeli airstrikes resulting in 136 fatalities in the last 24 hours alone, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry. The country’s health system is under severe strain, with warnings from the World Health Organization about impending health crises among displaced populations.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has directed accusations at Iran, claiming that the country is exacerbating regional unrest. He expressed a desire for peace with Iran, contingent upon the removal of its current regime.
Conversely, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has called for global Muslim support for Hezbollah, labelling Israel’s actions as “criminal.” This follows reports of the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike.
As tensions escalate, US President Joe Biden has called for a ceasefire, expressing cautious support for Israel’s military actions while advocating for restraint. Meanwhile, Hezbollah has retaliated with rocket attacks on northern Israel, prompting further Israeli airstrikes across multiple fronts.
The conflict has led several airlines, including Air France and Emirates, to suspend flights to Tel Aviv and Beirut due to security concerns. The US is reportedly considering deploying additional troops to support Israel if needed, as diplomatic efforts to manage the situation continue.
