An Israeli airstrike outside Damascus, Syrian capital on Monday killed a senior adviser in Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) and three security personnel, reports Reuters. Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi has said that the Israel “will certainly pay” for the killing in Syria on Monday.

In a statement Raisi said, “Without a doubt, this action is another sign of frustration, helplessness and incapacity of the usurping Zionist regime (Israel) in the region.” He added that Israel “will certainly pay for this crime”.

Sayyed Razi Mousavi, one of the top IRGC commanders in Syria was killed during the air strike. He played a vital role in the commanding group as he was responsible for coordinating the military alliance between Syria and Iran, an important part of Iran’s regional network of allies and proxies known as the “Axis of Resistance”.

Iran’s state television was interrupted to announce the death of Mousavi and it said, “he had been among those accompanying Qassem Soleimani”. Soleimani was the head of the Guards elite Quds Force who was killed in a US drone attack in Iran in 2020.

It is believed that the strike came in fear that Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza would lead to the expansion of conflict into wider regions which may even result in the pulling of Iran-backed groups such as Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, reports Al Jazeera.

As per the sources, Mousavi has been a target of several assassination attempt by Israel. He was accused by Israel of being an instrumental figure within the network of arms smuggling from Iran to Syria, to Iraq to Syria, and to end with Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah has warned Israel for crossing the limit in response to the killing of senior IRGC and called it a “blatant and shameless attack”, reports spectator.

Earlier this month, Iran said Israel strikes has killed two IRGC members in Syria who has been serving as military advisers there.
