Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has suspended the cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), following the law passed by Parliament last week on Wednesday. Iran had threatened to halt the cooperation with IAEA, accusing it of siding with the western countries and, moreover, siding with Israel’s justification of its airstrikes on the nation.

Israel attacked Iran a day after the IAEA board had voted to declare Iran in violation of obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). According to the law passed, the IAEA will now have to get approval from Tehran’s Supreme National Security Council for any further future inspection.

Responding to the recent development, IAEA stated that they are fully aware of the report and are awaiting further official information from Iran.

“The government is mandated to immediately suspend all cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency under the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons and its related Safeguards Agreement,” state television quoted the bill as saying. “This suspension will remain in effect until certain conditions are met, including the guaranteed security of nuclear facilities and scientists,” official added.

Iran’s decision had drawn immediate condemnation from Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar. “Iran has just issued a scandalous announcement about suspending its cooperation with the IAEA,” he said in a X post. “This is a complete renunciation of all its international nuclear obligations and commitments.,” he added.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Abbas Araghchi has ruled out the quick resumption of talks with the United States after President Donald Trump said US negotiation would restart as early as this week. Araghchi said negotiations would not start as quickly as Trump had indicated, and that Iran first needs assurances against further attacks.

He made this remark on CBS Evening News on Monday when the foreign ministers of the G7 issued a statement calling for dialogue on a deal to curb Iran’s nuclear programme.
