Ever since the start of Israel-Hamas war in October 7, 2023, the Western media was accused of being heavily biased and running on Israeli propaganda. BBC, CNN, New York Times, and several other biggies were brought under scrutiny for their credibility due to the heavily biased reporting on Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza. Several journalists, including those working on renowned media houses like BBC came forward complaining about losing their jobs for accurate reporting on the heavily unbalanced war. They were fired for being “pro-Palestine”.

Israel has started the war again, and killed more than 400 Palestinians, of which more than 170 are children within few hours. 500 more Palestinians were heavily injured. Israel clung to its age-old claim that they were targeting Hamas members.

Amidst all this, a board member of the media company owning Politico said the outlet’s reporting was “one-sided”. Martin Varsavsky, a board member for the media company that owns Politico decried that the article was “one-sided Hamas support”.

Varsavsky, a board member of Berlin-based media company Axel Springer, took to X on Tuesday and wrote, “I am on the board of Axel Springer that owns Político. I consider this article one sided Hamas support…It fails to mention that the airstrikes were aimed at eliminating top Hamas military and thar Israel was successful at doing so. It also quotes casualty figures given by Hamas that are not believed to be accurate”.

Netizens were quick to point out that the job of a board member is not to vet what the journalists do. Heidi N Moore, former finance editor of The Guardian, said, “The interference of a board member or executive in the work of journalism is pure corruption. Your experience is in telecoms, not in journalism. Stick to what you know and stop pressuring journalists to support what every knowledgeable organization has defined as a genocide”.

She said she felt sorry for all the journalists ” who have to do their work knowing that a disgraceful arrogant ignorant investor thinks he can tell them how to do their jobs because he has more money than sense”.

Osasu Obayuwana, former Foreign Affairs Editor for The Guardian, and also worked for BBC, wondered of it was Hamas who violated the ceasefire deal for the Gaza genocide to continue. He asked, “Did Hamas commit any attack, to violate the ceasefire, before Israel launched an attack?”.

One user shared a meme, showing how “Hamas” is being used as a card to silence any sort of dissent.

Some also shared video footages from Gaza, showing the deeply wounded children in hospital criticising the ‘targeting of Hamas leaders’ claims.

Israeli supporters always tried to highlight death toll and casualty figures given by “Hamas-run Ministry”, which were reportedly part of propaganda aimed at reducing the accuracy of the information by inciting doubt. However, Israeli intelligence services itself has said that the figures released by Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza were generally accurate.

As per an article in Mekomit written by Yuval Avraham said the numbers given by Hamas were accepted for inclusion in briefings to senior Israeli officials after intelligence services conducted operations and analysis to monitor the health ministry’s information collection methods and its internal communications. It was determined that the statics were credible. Reportedly, an Israeli intelligence official confirmed the Israeli government’s use of the Gaza ministry numbers to VICE News, while two officials from European intelligence services said they were widely used in official briefings internationally.

“The secret services looked at the health ministry’s collection methods and determined the numbers were generally credible, so instead of collecting their own information they decided to use the (Hamas) numbers…There’s no possibility of collecting exact data in this situation but their system is generally transparent and credible,” said the Israeli official, as quoted by media.
