UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has sacked Suella Braverman, UK Interior minister, on Monday. The decision came as Ms Braverman”s allegation on police”s handling of a pro-Palestinian march last week erupted controversy. As per the BBC report, Prime Minister will also take up a cabinet reshuffle later on Monday.
On Saturday, Ms Braverman bypassed Mr Sunak”s instructions by publishing an article accusing police handling of the march. Prime Minister was forced to take action as her remarks caused inflaming tensions and posed right-wing protesters to take to the streets of London.
In an opinion piece published, she questioned the Police of “double standard” in the way they handle protestors. As per her claims right-wing protestors were “rightly met with a stern response” on the otherhand, pro-Palestinian mobs were “largely ignored.” Ms Braverman says that police played “favouritsm” when it comes to agitators.
She had compared the pro-Palestinian Armistice Day rally to sectarian marches in Northern Ireland. In few days before, she called the rallies demanding for a ceasefire in Gaza as “hate marches”. The controversy escalated since five opposition parties demanded for her expulsion when they came to know that her article have not met the required approval from Prime Minister”s office.
This is the second time, she was ousted from the cabinet position in midway. Ms Braverman was appointed as the Home Secretary during the Liz Truss government in 2022 but for breaking technical security she had to leave the role. It was when Mr Sunak came in power she was placed again to the cabinet position. Even before, Ms Braverman has caught attention for her controversial opinions.
Latest reports indicates James Cleverly, the former foreign minister, will be appointed to Mr Braverman”s position.
