With already declining diplomatic relations between India and Canada, the students in Canada are now facing an increasing problem of unemployment. As per the labour force survey provided by National Statistic Agency of Canada, the employment rate has been going down since January this year and now the rate has sunk to 61.8 percentage from 62.5 percentage within less than two months.
The survey has been conducted by including citizens, immigrants, recent graduates, and students doing part-time jobs. When compared to previous year, this November has seen far higher percentage of unemployment which shows the declining condition of the labour market this year.
Around 20,000 students went to Canada from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh mainly pursuing STEM courses, and instead of securing lucrative jobs they are now thwarted with unemployment. Recent graduates are also forced to take up odd jobs as delivery agents, in electronic stores and restaurants, said Times of India.
“I knew that getting a good job would be an issue, but this is getting worse by the day. I am working for over 14 hours and still cannot afford my rent and food. I have applied to 17 companies but have not received a single reply in the last five months”, said 24-year-old Secunderabad with a masters in computer science from the college of Toronto, as quoted by TOI.
Another student named Kompally has been in Canada since 2018. She said even after spending two years after her graduation, she could not land herself a job relevant to her field. She is currently working in a mobile store. Though she wants to do MBA, she said it is not possible as “I can hardly make ends meet, let alone save for post-graduation”.
