Suspect of Mass Killing in the US Found Dead After 2 Days of Massacre

Robert Card, the suspect in the mass killing in the US state of Maine, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The body was found at 7:45 p.m. (2345 GMT) on Friday, according to Maine Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck.

Card”s body was found two days after he killed 18 people in a mass shooting at a bowling alley and a bar-restaurant in Lewiston, Maine. Thirteen others were wounded. His body was found while hundreds of law enforcement agents were searching for him.

“I”m breathing a sigh of relief tonight knowing that Robert Card is no longer a threat to anyone,” Governor Janet Mills said at a hastily called news conference.

US Senator Susan Collins of Maine, who received a call from President Joe Biden, echoed the sentiment, saying that “Mainers can breathe a collective sigh of relief” after the perpetrator of the heinous attacks in Lewiston was found.

The authorities identified the victims on Friday, including a husband and wife in their 70s and a 14-year-old boy killed alongside his father. Card, the suspect in the shootings, was found dead in Lisbon Falls, Maine, near a recycling center where he used to work.

Card, an army reservist, had not been deployed to any combat zones. He had recently undergone psychiatric treatment after claiming to hear voices.

The authorities had been chasing down more than 530 tips and leads on Card”s possible whereabouts before he was found dead.

Earlier on Friday, law enforcement agents searched for evidence or a body along the Androscoggin River in Lisbon, Maine, seven miles southeast of Lewiston. Card”s white SUV was found nearby.

This shooting is one of the deadliest in the United States since 2017, when a gunman opened fire on a crowded music festival in Las Vegas, killing 60 people.
