Dries van Agt, the prime minister of the Netherlands from 1977 to 1982 and his wife Eugenie died hand in hand through euthanasia earlier this month in Mr Dries’s hometown, Nijmegen. The couple, both at 93 choose to end their life journey together due to deteriorating health ailments. Both were lied to rest next to each other. The couple lived around 70 years together after their marriage.

A press note regarding death news of the former prime minister said, “In consultation with the immediate family, we announce that our founder and honorary chairman Dries van Agt passed away on Monday, February 5, in his hometown of Nijmegen.” “He died together and hand in hand with his beloved wife Eugenie van Agt-Krekelberg, the support and support with whom he was together for more than seventy years, and whom he always continued to refer to as “my girl’” it added.

As per the Guardian, Mr Dries suffered from a brain haemorrhage in 2019 and never fully recovered. The news portal also reported that both were severely ill and were in a situation in which one could not live without the other, citing Gerad Jonkman, the nonprofit”s director.

The Euthanasia death of the former prime minister and his wife follows many other similar cases in the Dutch Republic. According to a report, double euthanasia, especially among couples has seen an increase, with 26 cases of double-assisted suicide reported in 2020 and 58 in 2022 out of a total of 9,000 euthanasia cases.

However, talking about the increasing trend among couples to opt for double euthanasia, Euthanasia Expert Constance de Vries Euthanasia Expertise Center attributed the anxieties that many people feel when they are getting aged to face life alone to the double euthanasia.

Euthanasia had become legal in the Netherlands since 2002 with conditions such as unbearable suffering, absence of prospect of life, and long-held wish for death.

Being the prime minister in 1977, Mr Dries became hugely popular due to his humorous character and he also had an affiliation towards the leftist ideologies. The former prime minister was also known for his outspoken stance against Israel”s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Mr Dries had called him a war criminal in 20016.
