A huge fire has erupted at a police facility in the Egyptian city of Ismailia and has injured 38 people according to emergency services and local media. The blaze started at around 3 am(GMT) which was brought under control by about 5:20 am (GMT) according to witness, reports Arab News.
No fatalities were immediately reported over the blaze on Monday. The local hospitals were alerted and the firefighters has managed to contain the fire at the facility in Ismailia.
The video of the city’s security directorate engulfed in fire is posted on the social media. The cause of the blaze is still unknown.
Interior Minister Mahmoud Tawfik said that a committee of advisers will be formed to look into the cause of the fire and will review the construction safety of the building and also stated that the building will be restored as soon as possible.
The health ministry has deployed 50 ambulances joined by military emergency services including two planes, state media reports.
It is reported that 24 people are suffering from “asphyxiation” along with two from burns.
Deadly fires are common hazard in Egypt due to fire codes rarely being enforced and slow emergency response times. In August last year, a short circuit has led to killing of 41 people in a Church in Cairo. This has resulted in prompting calls to improve the country’s infrastructure and the response time of the fire brigade.
Similarly in March, 20 people lost their lives in a fire at a textile factory in the capital. And in 2020, two hospital fire has led to death of fourteen people in which seven of them were coronavirus patients.
