The Indian Navy on March 29 rescued a hijacked Iranian-flagged FV AI-Kambar vessel along with 23 Pakistani crew after the INS Sumedha intercepted the ship. The Iranian fishing ship was hijacked by the Somalian pirates in the Arabian Sea and Nine armed pirates had reportedly boarded the fishing vessel. After receiving information on the incident, the Indian Navy deployed the warship INS Sumedha towards the hijacked vessel and made the pirates onboard surrender.
According to a statement issued by the Navy, the guided missile frigate INS Trishul joined the INS Sumedha to strengthen the operation after the INS Sumedha intercepted FV Al-Kambar during the early hours of the day. The Navy after a 12-hour-long operation rescued 23 Pakistani nationals from the Somalian pirates.
“After more than 12 hrs of intense coercive tactical measures as per the SOPs, the pirates on board the hijacked FV were forced to surrender. The crew, comprising 23 Pakistani nationals, have been safely rescued,” the Navy said.
The statement added that the Indian Naval specialist teams are presently undertaking thorough sanitisation and seaworthiness checks of the FV to escort the vessel to a safe area for resuming normal fishing activities.

In an earlier post, the Navy had said that they received inputs on a potential piracy incident onboard the Iranian Fishing Vessel “Al-Kambar” late evening on March 28. It also stated that two Navel ships were deployed for maritime security operations, adding that the hijacked ship was intercepted.
According to reports, the Naval specialists boarded the FV Al-Kambar to perform sanitisation after the pirates surrendered following negotiation.
However, the Navy in its statement added that it remains committed to to ensuring maritime security in the region and the safety of seafarers, irrespective of nationalities. Indian Navy has recently enhanced the deployment of ships and surveillance in the region to ensure maritime security. It has also engaged in several rescue operations.
