The ‘Uncommitted’ movement called on the Democratic Party to reconsider its decision to bar the Palestinian-Americans from speaking at its ongoing National Convention in Chicago. The decision from Democrats came after the parents of Israeli-American captive, Hersh Goldberg-Polin were allowed to address the delegates from the convention’s main stage.

Taking to its X account, the movement said that it urge the “Democratic Party to reject a hierarchy of human value by ensuring Palestinian voices are heard on the main stage…and also strongly hope that we will also be hearing from Palestinians who’ve endured the largest civilian death toll since 1948”.

The movement highlighted that “The difficulty in approving even a single Palestinian American speaker among the dozens of speakers on the convention stage sends a troubling message to our anti-war voters, suggesting they aren’t truly included in this party”.

While saying that the pain and loss of an Israeli and Palestinian are no different, “there is an added sting in our communities when we know that it is our tax dollars funding the killing of our loved ones.

Acknowledging Goldberg-Polin’s parents’ calling for ceasefire, Abbas Alwieh, a member of the movement, said the main goal of the movement is to call for a truce.

Alaweih wrote that “No is not an acceptable answer. Please reconsider. We’re being extremely reasonable”. He said he is “waiting for the call”.

The Israeli captive’s parents called for ceasefire in Gaza to return the captives held by Hamas and to save the lives of “innocent civilians”.

“It’s very simple: You stop sending bombs, the bombs stop dropping”,

The Uncommitted movement’s request to have their voice heard at the Democratic National Convention caught attention of several high-profiles, including actor Mark Ruffalo and writer Ta-Nehisi Coates. The latter wrote an article in Vanity Fair questioning why there was no room for Palestinian-American voices in the so-called “big tent” of Democrats.

Mehdi Hassan, the American-British journalist pointed out that for the Democrats, Gaza war is an “inconvenient genocide”. He said there are many Democratic delegates in the convention who support an arms embargo on Israel, and are against what is happening in Gaza, “BUT they don’t want to get it in the way of pro-Kamala party atmosphere”. He said it is an “inconvenient genocide” for the Democrats.

While the Dems celebrate the National Convention as the “hope and joy” for the Americans, Palestinian-American congresswoman, Rashida Tlaib, said that the silence on Gaza war, “shatters the false narrative of hope and joy”.
