Justin Trudeau Claims 'Tonal Shift' In India Relations After US Murder Plot Allegation

Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister, recently said that he has noted a “tonal shift” in India”s approach towards Canada after Washington warned about India’s involvement in a thwarted plot to kill a Sikh separatist leader on American soil, as reported by CBC.

“I think there is a beginning of an understanding that they can’t bluster their way through this and there is an openness to collaborating in a way that perhaps they were less open before”, said Trudeau. The Canadian Prime Minister said Canada do not want to be in a situation of having a fight with India” as Canada would like to work on trade del and the Indo-Pacific strategy, but it is “foundational” for Canada to ensure the safety of their citizens.

Trudeau added that India might have reached an understanding that “churning out tax against Canada isn’t going to make this problem go away”.

Pro-Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Najjar was shot dead outside a Sikh temple on June 18. After the G20 visit in September, Justin Trudeau, Canadian Prime Minister accused Indian government officials’ involvement in Najjar’s death in the House of Commons. Indian government rejected the accusation as “absurd”. Ever since the open accusation from Canada, the relation between India and Canada worsened.

The row got more worsened as both of the country expelled its senior diplomats. India also suspended visa services in Canada citing ‘operational reasons’, and issued an advisory for its citizens and those who are travelling to Canada to exercise “utmost caution in view of growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes and criminal violence” in the country.
