‘Indian nationals whose presence is not essential are advised to leave the country as soon as possible’, said Arindam Bagchi, the official spokesperson of Indian Ministry of External Affairs. Mr Bagchi was attending a media briefing on Friday.
Niger is witnessing widespread protests and violence following last month’s coup. Several European countries have already evacuated their citizens from Niger, reported The Telegraph.
The air space is currently closed. ‘The government of India is closely monitoring ongoing developments in Niger’, said Mr Bagchi in an official statement.
He also warned those who are planning to travel through the border. ‘When departing through the land [Niger] border, utmost precautions may be taken to ensure safety and security. The Ministry has also put a warning on those who are planning to travel to Niger in the coming days’, he said.

There are approximately 250 Indians in Niger, reported The New Indian Express.
Those Indian nationals who are not yet registered with the Indian Embassy in Niamey are also advised to do so.

It was on 26 July, Gen Abdourahmane Tchiani seized power in Niger by overthrowing the President Mohamed Bazoum by staging a coup.
The African Union (AU) has already called for the immediate release of Mr Bazoum.
As reported by The New Indian Express, AU Commission’s President Moussa Faki Mahamat issued an official statement on Mr Bazoum’s release. ‘We urge for the immediate release of President Bazoum. Such treatment of a democratically elected leader is unacceptable’, said Mr Mahamat in the statement.
