Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised the importance of mutual trust and respect in India-China relations after a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Kazan BRICS Summit. Modi stated, “India-China relations are important for the people of our countries, and for regional and global peace and stability. Mutual trust, mutual respect, and mutual sensitivity will guide bilateral relations.”
The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the significance of the recent disengagement agreement, which resolved issues that arose along the India-China border in 2020. Modi stressed the importance of properly managing disputes without allowing them to disrupt peace and tranquillity in the region. Both leaders agreed that their Special Representatives on the boundary question would meet soon to explore a fair and mutually acceptable solution.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri noted that this was the first formal bilateral meeting between the two leaders since 2019, following their last interaction at the BRICS Summit in Brasilia. The discussion came shortly after the resolution of border disputes through diplomatic and military channels. Modi underscored the necessity of maintaining peace along the border to foster stable relations.
The leaders reviewed bilateral relations from a long-term perspective, agreeing that cooperation between India and China would benefit regional and global peace. Both acknowledged the need for “maturity and wisdom” to address each other’s concerns and promote stability.
Officials from both countries will engage further through established diplomatic channels to strengthen strategic communication and stabilise relations. Modi also expressed support for China’s presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) next year, indicating a willingness to enhance cooperation through platforms like BRICS.
