Misinformation often appeared clad in the joke robe. One such misinformation which recently resurfaced was about people flying to Austria “mistaking” the country to be Australia. A media user Nazir Afzal wrote in X (formerly twitter) that in a year, more than 100 passengers fly to Austria thinking the country they are flying to be Australia and added that “so Salzburg Airport has a special counter for them”.

The “joke” recently resurfaced again on X platform and TikTok and was viewed by millions. The post not only sounded funny, but also sowed confusions in the minds of many. The context adding feature of X revealed that help desk in Salzburg Airport is actually a joke, when a user shared the rumor about the alleged help desk.

The Salzburg Airport also confirmed that there is no such help desk in the airport. The deputy head of public relations for the Salzburg airport said in an email to The Washington Post, “there is no such counter at Salzburg Airport, never has been, as a matter of fact. I have never heard of anyone travelling to Salzburg by mistake, when they actually wanted to go Australia”. She also said that a company called Commend, which is an ad company that sells intercom system several years ago was the root from which the recent rumor started spreading.
