A passenger plane carrying 62 people has crashed in São Paulo state, Brazil, according to local media and authorities. The ATR-72 aircraft, operated by Voepass Linhas Aereas, was on a scheduled flight from Cascavel in the state of Parana to Guarulhos in São Paulo when it went down.
The plane, which had 58 passengers and four crew members on board, crashed in the city of Vinhedo, just outside Sao Paulo. Sao Paulo’s state fire brigade confirmed the crash on social media and reported that seven rescue teams were dispatched to the scene.
Dramatic footage shared on social media shows the plane spiraling out of the sky before crashing into a cluster of trees, followed by a large plume of black smoke. Other videos show the aftermath of the crash, with the wreckage of the plane engulfed in flames and thick smoke rising from a residential area where several houses were reportedly hit.
Brazilian television network GloboNews broadcasted images of a large area on fire, with smoke billowing from what appeared to be the plane’s fuselage.
As of now, there has been no official confirmation on the number of casualties or survivors. Authorities are conducting rescue operations and investigating the cause of the crash.
