Russia Summons US Ambassador Over Missiles Attack On Crimea; To Follow Retaliatory Measures

The US provided missiles that killed at least four people, including children, and wounded 151 others in Crimea. Russia has blamed the United States for the attack and summoned US Ambassador Lynne Tracy. Russia accused the US of wagging a ‘proxy war’ and said to ‘definitely follow’ the retaliatory measures.

As per the Russian Ministry of Defence, the attack on Russian-occupied Crimean Penisula (Annexed in 2014, which Russia considers its territory) was conducted with five US-supplied Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), supplied to Ukraine this year. The ministry said that four missiles were shot down and the fifth was detonated midair. The US specialists set the missiles’ flight coordinates based on the information from US spy satellites, the ministry claimed.

Since February 2022, Moscow has claimed to fight a proxy war with the West. US Department of State spokesperson Matthew Miller said that the US provides Ukraine with weapons to protect its sovereignty and the US Ambassador has conveyed regret over civilian loss.

Krelim said that US permission to Ukraine to use weapons supplied by the US to target Russian territories gives rise to the likelihood of ‘escalation’ and incurs ‘consequences’.

Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, “Such actions by Washington will not be left without a response and there will be response measures”.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov while talking in a news conference called the attack “absolutely barbaric” and said that Moscow would react to the US involvement. He also referred to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s comment about arming countries to potentially launch strikes on Western targets.
