Kyiv: On Sunday, June 1, Ukraine launched a strategic drone attack codenamed “Operation Spider’s Web” at multiple Russian air bases. An attack that was planned for over a year and half was hailed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a “brilliant operation.”
Using 17 drones, involving a corresponding number of drone operators, the operation was launched on at least five military airbases deep inside Russia’s borders and left some 41 bomber aircraft in flames.

Ukraine’s domestic security, the SBU, has claimed responsibility for the operation. The attack came on the same day that Ukraine sent a delegation to Istanbul for a new round of crucial peace talks with Russia.
“Today, a brilliant operation was carried out — on enemy territory, targeting only military objectives, specifically the equipment used to strike Ukraine. Russia suffered significant losses — entirely justified and deserved,” Zelenskyy said in a X post.

According to the statement by Russia’s Defence Ministry, air bases that caught fire in the Irkutsk region are over 4,000 kilometres (2,500 miles) from Ukraine, as are those in the Murmansk region in the north. The Ministry also added that strikes on the Ivanovo, Ryazan, and Amur airfields were repelled.
According to a Ukrainian security official, Ukraine hid explosive-laden specialised drones called FPV drones inside the roofs of mobile wooden cabins. The cabins were loaded onto the trucks and were driven to the perimeter of the air bases. The roof panels of the cabins were opened by a remotely-activated mechanism, enabling the drones to fly out and begin their attack, multiple news reports state.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President arrived in Vilnius on Monday for a summit with the leaders of NATO’s eastern and Nordic members, who are some of Kyiv’s staunchest supporters amid the Russian invasion.
During the gathering, Zelenskyy said: “Europe, together with America, has better weapons than Russia. We also have stronger tactical solutions – our operation “Spiderweb” yesterday proved that. Russia must feel what its losses mean. . . . And when Russia takes losses in this war, it’s obvious to everyone that Ukraine is the one holding the line – not just for itself, but for all of Europe.”
