Trump Faces Setback As Democrats Flip US Senate In 2026 Midterm Elections
The Democratic Party has won control of the United States Senate in the 2026 midterm elections, dealing a setback to President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
However, the results for the House of Representatives are still being counted, and control of the chamber remains undecided.
Democrats made significant gains in several traditionally Republican states, winning key Senate races and changing the balance of power in the upper chamber.
The results are being seen as a major challenge to Trump’s administration ahead of the final two years of his presidency.
In Texas, Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton in the Senate race, while Democrats also secured important victories in South Carolina and Kansas.

In North Carolina, Democrat Roy Cooper won a closely watched Senate contest against Republican Michael Whatley. Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff also retained his seat in Georgia.
The Democratic gains were driven in part by voter concerns over rising prices, inflation, the economy and the government’s handling of major issues.
According to the Associated Press, many voters expressed dissatisfaction with the country’s direction and the cost of living.
The battle for the House remains closely watched. All 435 seats were contested in the election, and Democrats need at least 218 seats to secure a majority.
Although the party has made gains, media networks have not yet projected an overall winner for the chamber.

The elections have also produced important results in gubernatorial races. In Texas, Democrat Gina Hinojosa was projected to defeat Republican Governor Greg Abbott, according to election projections reported by Axios.
Reacting to the Republican losses, Trump sought to distance himself from the outcome, saying he was not on the ballot.
Meanwhile, Democratic leaders have indicated that they intend to use their new Senate majority to scrutinise the administration’s policies.
The change in Senate control could affect the confirmation of federal judicial appointments and increase congressional oversight of the Trump administration.
If Democrats also win the House, they will gain greater control over congressional investigations and legislative priorities.
The final balance of power in Congress will become clearer once the remaining House races are called.
