While addressing an event, New York Mayor Eric Adams condemned recent attacks against Sikhs and expressed his solidarity for the community. He stated that the Sikh Turban does not reflect terrorism but rather a history of protection.
Yesterday I joined our Sikh community to say in one united voice that we will not tolerate violence or hate against these New Yorkers.
I will commit myself to educate, to protect and to continuously be a part of this community. Our Sikh brothers and sisters mean so much to me. pic.twitter.com/eAbzZE3Ksg

While addressing the audience, Mr. Adams said that, ”It (Sikh turban) represents your history of being a protector that is now being used as a target and a tool to seek out and harm your community”, said Mr. Adams, as quoted by Times of India.
The Mayor vowed to protect the Sikh brothers and to keep them away from danger. During the session, Mr. Adams remembered Jasmer Singh, who died after an assault launched at him by a man. He said Jasmer Singh should be present at the event and “he should still be living out the American dream”. He added the dream has turned into a nightmare when Mr. Jasmer was “taken from us prematurely”.
The Mayor called out a “full frontal assault on ending hate” and people should be clearly educated about what the Sikh community stands for and what they represent. He added that what is playing across the globe is being added to the Sikh community which should be stopped.
Mr. Adams recalled the time of Covid 19 pandemic during which the sikhs opened their doors and showed care to the needy people. He said this trait of Sikhs shows that they are the real protectors.
The Mayor also remarked that the ignorance must be turned around to understanding and together they can “change the dialogue and narrative” about the Sikhs.
