United Kingdom”s nursing regulator, Nursing and Midwifery Council accused of the “alarming” claims of racism towards patients and staffs belonging to “black and ethnic” minority communities.
A Sikh patient left a note on his deathbed accusing the nurses of tying his beard with plastic gloves, laughed at him, offered him food that he could not consume due to religious practises and left him in his own urine by refusing to respond to call bell seeking help. The note was written in Punjabi and was found by his family, says The Independent.
According to a dossier that came under the possession of The Independent, despite receiving the above mentioned note, the nurses were allowed to work.
One of the senior whistle-blower of NMC called for addressing the racism against staffs and patients and demanded the Nursing and Midwifery Council”s conduct on treating the alleged cases of biases. The whistle-blower claimed that the NMC has consistently applied guidance on their own discriminatory views and left the allegations of “institutional racism” of their staffs “unchecked”.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council of the United Kingdom is also accused of the “culture of fear” harbouring in the organization where the staffs are afraid to raise their concerns to the authority.
Though investigation was ordered regarding the case were initially closed off, the NMC confirmed about the re-assessment of the case. As collected by The Independent, the depth of the revealation of the alleged “institutional racism” goes as far as the cases of a black nurse who was forced to go for a fitness-to-practice hearing for her response to a racially abusive patient. Later on ,the nurse took volutary removal. Meanwhile a white nurse was cleared of charges by the NMC despite her case of racially abusing the public. The revealtion also include that the staff believe the “white, middle-class women” is the “cultural capital” of the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
