US President Joe Biden approved the transfer of thousands more bombs to Israel on the same day air strikes from the latter killed seven aid workers of World Central Kitchen in Gaza, said Washington Post. The killing of aid workers has sparked global outrage against Israel.
US has supplied Israel with weaponries despite global criticism as Israel’s lethal attack against Palestinian citizen rose alarmingly. The new finding contradicts Joe Biden’s emotional statement on the death of the aid workers. Biden said he was “outraged and heartbroken” by the tragic incident and said that such events will never happen again.
The US official said that the approved transfer included 1000 MK82 500-pound bombs, over 1000 small diameter bombs and fuses for MK80 bombs. Post said all the weapons were from authorization granted by Congress several years before the October 7th Hamas attack.
The State Department spokesperson confirmed to Washington Post that the approval from Biden occurred sometime “prior” to when the Israeli bombing killed the aid convoy. The delivery of the arms package would not occur until late 2025, and the US government has authority to suspend the package any time before the delivery.
The spokesperson did not comment on the question of why US did not at least pause the deal until Israel’s “transparent” investigation on the killing of the aid workers come out.
After a call between Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, US Secretary General Antony Blinken said that there would be consequences if Tel Aviv did not heed to Washington’s policy on protecting civilians and providing more aid.
After the call with Biden, Netanyahu’s office announced a “temporary” aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip. In a statement the office said, “Israel will allow the temporary delivery of humanitarian aid through Ashdod and the Erez checkpoint”. The said checkpoint is a port situated about 40 km north of Gaza and the Beit Hanoon land crossing.
Israeli Army Radio said that around 250 trucks will pass through Karem Abu Salem (Karem Shalom) crossing through the southern Israel, whereas 100 trucks will go though the Rafah border with Egypt. This will lead to a huge increase in the aid trucks allowed to Gaza, which only see 200 per day, said the Israeli Army Radio.
Meanwhile, one of the largest Orthodox Jewish organisations, The Union hand-delivered 180,000 letters to White House asking the US President to continue the support for Israel’s war in Gaza, combat anti-Semitism, and secure the release of captives from Hamas resistance group of Gaza.
