Amid the ongoing Israel-Palestine and Russia-Ukraine war, United States has announced its attempt to develop new nuclear bomb which will be more powerful than the bombs dropped on Japan’s Hiroshima in August, 1945; the one which led to the second World War.
The new bomb which is dubbed as B61-13 is believed to have a blast yield similar to the B61-7 bomb’s 360 kilotons of TNT (trinitrotoluene), says New York Post. The atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima had the blast yield of 15 kilotons of TNT. According to pentagon, the B61-13 would be designed to attack, “harder and large-area military targets”.
If the Congress gives the green signal for the new nuclear bomb, the job of manufacturing the new bomb will be of the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration.
The Assistant Secretary of Defence for Space Policy John Plumb said in a statement that “today’s announcement is reflective of a changing security environment and growing threats from potential adversaries”.
He also added that the US has a responsibility to continue to assess and field the capabilities that they need to credibly deter and “if necessary, respond to strategic attacks, and assure our allies”.
According to an estimation by Federation of American Scientist, Russia has around 5,977 nuclear ammunitions for the purpose of war and US has 5,428.
As quoted by The Post, one of the National Security Council spokesperson told that, “since coming into office, the Biden Administration has taken a balanced approach between maintaining a safe, secure and effective nuclear deterrent and strong…and taking those steps needed to the reduce the global salience of nuclear weapons and bring us closer to a world without nuclear weapons”.
The super powers, namely Us, Russia and China can be said to be involved in a rat race to boast about whose nuclear nook weighs the most. Last month, US president Joe Biden has “warned” that Vladimir Putin suing the “tactical nuclear weapon is real”.
Pentagon’s annual assessment which was released earlier this month stated that China has surpassed its last year’s number in case of nuclear ammunitions. Report said that China has expanded its navy from 340 to 370 this year.
